Shared pattern of face preferences in human infants and pet dogs

چکیده
Human eyes are unique. Unlike other primates whose pupils are masked by a dark sclera, the human eye highlights a dark pupil against a white sclera. Newborn infants look longer at schematic stimuli with three blobs arranged in a face-like configuration – but only if the blobs match the dark-on-light phenotype of the human eye. If a visual preference for faces with human-like eyes is innately specified, it is a candidate for selection across domestication. Over thousands of years of evolution, wolves became dogs who are adept at working and living with us. We report visual preference data showing that adult pet dogs prefer to look at face-like stimuli with a human-like eye phenotype, even though this phenotype is not prevalent in dogs – just as human infants do. Convergence in this visual preference suggests sensitivity to human eyes is an important behavioral adaptation for social partnership with humans.

Comparison of Two Veterinary Blood Glucose Meters and One Human-Based Glucose Meter for Use in Dogs
Background: Recently, tendency to use veterinary specific Portable blood glucose meter (PBGMs) has increased. However, assessment of their analytical and clinical accuracy is a matter of concern. OBJECTIVES: To assess accuracy of two veterinary (AlphaTRAK2 and CERA-PET) and one human-based (Bionime) PBGMs for canine blood samples. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 160 client-ow...
متن کاملThe Processing of Human Emotional Faces by Pet and Lab Dogs: Evidence for Lateralization and Experience Effects
From all non-human animals dogs are very likely the best decoders of human behavior. In addition to a high sensitivity to human attentive status and to ostensive cues, they are able to distinguish between individual human faces and even between human facial expressions. However, so far little is known about how they process human faces and to what extent this is influenced by experience. Here w...
متن کاملThe Way Dogs (Canis familiaris) Look at Human Emotional Faces Is Modulated by Oxytocin. An Eye-Tracking Study
Dogs have been shown to excel in reading human social cues, including facial cues. In the present study we used eye-tracking technology to further study dogs' face processing abilities. It was found that dogs discriminated between human facial regions in their spontaneous viewing pattern and looked most to the eye region independently of facial expression. Furthermore dogs played most attention...

متن کاملFood and Food-Odor Preferences in Dogs: A Pilot Study
Evaluation of food palatability and preference is of great importance to the pet food industry. One common technique for evaluating palatability is a 2-bowl test in which 2 products are offered simultaneously and food consumption is measured. This yields clear results with dogs trained to routinely conduct such comparisons, but it is less clear how this extends to untrained pet dogs. In additio...
